Grade 5

What is the mean?

mean

The amount each one would get if the total was shared out equally. Add all the values, then divide by how many values there are.

For example

Share 12 coconuts among 4 stalls equally: the mean is 3 coconuts each.

In Grade 5

Children share a total out equally between the values to see what the mean really represents.

Watch out for

Children often forget to divide by how many values there were. Adding is only the first half of finding a mean.

Say it at home

Add up a week of something counted daily and share the total across seven days.
