Grade 1

What is money?

money

Coins and notes used to buy things.

For example

You need money to buy a patty and juice at the shop.

In Grade 1

Children handle real coins and notes, sorting them by value, before adding any amounts on paper.

Watch out for

Children often think the bigger coin is worth more. The value is printed on the coin and has nothing to do with its size.

Say it at home

Let your child hand over the money at the shop and name each coin as it goes.
