Grade 1

What is a pattern?

pattern

Things that repeat or grow in the same way each time.

For example

Red bead, blue bead, red bead: the necklace follows a pattern.

In Grade 1

Children copy a pattern first, then continue it, and only later make one of their own and say the rule out loud.

Watch out for

Children often continue a pattern by guessing what looks nice instead of finding the part that repeats. Ask what comes again and again.

Say it at home

Clap a short rhythm and ask your child to clap it back, then keep it going without you.
