Children push two groups of real objects together and count them all, before they meet the plus sign.
Watch out for
Children often start counting again from one after joining two groups. Counting on from the bigger group is faster and just as correct.
Say it at home
Put two small handfuls together and ask how many altogether, starting from the bigger pile.
