Grade 4

What does it mean to multiply?

multiply

To work out how many there are in a number of equal groups.

For example

Multiply 7 crates by 6 bottles each to get 42 bottles.

In Grade 4

Children build arrays of equal rows and count them in steps before learning any times table by heart.

Watch out for

Children often think multiplying always makes a number bigger. Multiplying by one leaves it exactly the same.

Say it at home

Ask how many are in four rows of six, and let your child count in sixes to check.
