Grade 4

What does it mean to subtract?

subtract

To work out what is left after taking one amount away from another.

For example

Subtract the 15 tickets sold from 40 printed to see 25 left.

In Grade 4

Children take away from real amounts and also find the difference by counting up between two numbers.

Watch out for

Children often subtract the smaller digit from the larger one in each column, whichever way round they sit. Exchange from the next column instead.

Say it at home

Give your child a price and some money and ask how much change is due.

Younger children may meet this as: take away.
