Grade 4

What is a remainder?

remainder

The amount left over when a number will not divide evenly.

For example

Share 13 sweets among 4 children and the remainder is 1.

In Grade 4

Children share objects out until no more full groups can be made, then count what stays behind.

Watch out for

Children often write a remainder bigger than the number they divided by. If it is, another whole group can still be made.

Say it at home

Share sweets between three people and ask how many are left that cannot be shared.

Younger children may meet this as: left over.
