Grade 5

What are parallel lines?

parallel lines

Two lines that stay the same distance apart and never meet.

For example

The two long edges of a ruler run parallel and never touch.

In Grade 5

Children measure the gap between two lines in several places to check it never changes.

Watch out for

Children often think two lines that do not cross on the page are parallel. Measure the gap, because some lines meet further along.

Say it at home

Look for parallel lines on a gate or a fence and check the gaps match.
