Grade 5

What is a scalene triangle?

scalene triangle

A triangle where all three sides are different lengths.

For example

A sail with sides of 3, 4 and 5 metres is a scalene triangle.

In Grade 5

Children measure all three sides of a triangle before giving it a name.

Watch out for

Children often name a triangle by how it looks rather than by measuring. Two sides can look equal and still differ.

Say it at home

Draw a triangle and measure each side to see whether any two match.
