Grade 3

What is a sum?

sum

The answer you get when you add numbers together.

For example

Add 25 nutmegs and 14 nutmegs: the sum is 39 nutmegs.

In Grade 3

Children add two or more numbers and name the answer as the sum, keeping it separate from the numbers added.

Watch out for

Children often use sum to mean any calculation at all. A sum is the answer to an addition, not to a subtraction.

Say it at home

After adding up shopping items, ask your child to name the sum out loud.
