Grade 3

What is a Roman numeral?

Roman numeral

A way of writing numbers with letters, like I, V and X.

For example

Clock faces sometimes show four as IV in Roman numerals.

In Grade 3

Children read Roman numerals on clock faces and chapter headings before writing any of their own.

Watch out for

Children often think IV means one and five added together. A smaller letter before a bigger one means take it away.

Say it at home

Look at a clock with Roman numerals and read the hours around it together.
