Grade 3

What is a numerator?

numerator

The number on top of a fraction. It tells how many parts you have.

For example

Take 3 of the 4 sweetbread pieces and 3 is the numerator.

In Grade 3

Children point at the top number and say how many parts are taken, using cut up food or paper strips.

Watch out for

Children often think a bigger numerator always means a bigger fraction. It only counts parts, so the bottom number matters too.

Say it at home

Cut something into equal parts and ask how many pieces are being taken.

Younger children may meet this as: top number.
