Grade 3

What is an odd number?

odd number

A number that cannot be split into two equal whole groups.

For example

Seven is an odd number: the children pair up and one has no partner.

In Grade 3

Children pair objects up and find which numbers leave one without a partner.

Watch out for

Children often think a number is odd because it looks unusual. Only the last digit decides it, so check there instead.

Say it at home

Give your child a handful of objects and ask them to pair everything up to test it.
