Grade 1

What is a pictograph?

pictograph

A picture that shows how many, using drawings to stand for the things counted.

For example

On a market pictograph, one mango picture can stand for two mangoes.

In Grade 1

Children line up real objects first, then draw one picture for each one, and only later let a single picture stand for more than one.

Watch out for

Children often count the pictures and stop there. If one mango picture stands for two mangoes, four pictures mean eight mangoes, not four.

Say it at home

Read the key together before counting anything. Ask what one picture is worth, then count.
