Grade 1

What does it mean to count?

count

To say the numbers in order, one for each thing.

For example

Count the fishing boats as they come back into the bay.

In Grade 1

Children touch or move each thing as they say its number, so nothing is counted twice or skipped.

Watch out for

Children often say the numbers faster than they touch the objects, so the last number said is not the true amount. Slow the touching down.

Say it at home

Count real things your child can move, sliding each one across as the number is said.
