Grade 1

What does backward mean in maths?

backward

Counting back, from a larger number to a smaller one.

For example

Count backward from ten to zero before you shout ready or not.

In Grade 1

Children count backward out loud in rhymes and games before they meet subtraction in writing.

Watch out for

Children often skip a number when counting backward, especially through the teens. Slow down and touch something for each number.
