Grade 1

What is a group?

group

A set of things kept together so they can be counted or sorted.

For example

Keep all the buttons together in one group before you count them.

In Grade 1

Children sort real objects into groups by colour, size or kind, then count each group separately.

Watch out for

Children often count things twice when groups sit close together. Push each finished group well aside before starting the next.

Say it at home

Tip out a container and ask your child to sort it into groups before counting.
