Grade 3

composite number

A number that has more factors than just one and itself.

For example

Nine is a composite number because 3 rows of 3 make 9.

In Grade 3

Children arrange counters into rectangles and find the numbers with more than one arrangement.

Watch out for

Children often think every large number is composite. Some large numbers are prime, so the factors must be checked.
