Grade 3

What is an improper fraction?

improper fraction

A fraction where the top number is bigger than the bottom number, or the same as it.

For example

Five quarters of a cake make the improper fraction five over four.

In Grade 3

Children collect more parts than one whole holds and write the result as a single fraction.

Watch out for

Children often think an improper fraction is wrong because of its name. Improper simply means it is worth one whole or more.

Say it at home

Put three halves of fruit together and ask how many whole ones that makes.

Younger children may meet this as: top heavy.
